When to Use Radiation Protection in Medical Imaging
The Importance of Shielding
Radiation protection plays a critical role in patient safety and is a topic of ongoing discussion in the medical imaging profession. Proper shielding helps minimize unnecessary exposure while ensuring high-quality diagnostic images.
When Shielding Is Appropriate
Shielding should be used whenever possible, provided it does not obscure the anatomy being imaged. Examples of procedures where radiation protection is appropriate include:
Hand X-rays
Ankle X-rays
Chest X-rays
In these cases, lead aprons or other protective devices can be positioned to protect sensitive areas without interfering with the diagnostic image.
When Shielding Should Not Be Used
In some situations, shielding may obstruct the area of interest and compromise image quality. For example, during abdomen or pelvis exams, the lead shield would cover critical anatomy, making it unsuitable for use. In these instances, radiation safety is maintained through proper technique and exposure control rather than physical shielding.
