Routine Two-View Abdomen Exam

Projections Overview

A standard two-view abdomen exam includes:

  1. Air-Fluid Level Projection – This can be done as an erect image or a decubitus image.

    • Erect: Center two inches above the iliac crest to include the diaphragm and visualize any free air next to it.

    • Decubitus: Position the patient lying down, centering at the iliac crest.

  2. Supine Projection – Ensure the symphysis pubis is included in the image.

Purpose

This protocol ensures optimal visualization of both air-fluid levels and abdominal anatomy, aiding in accurate diagnosis.
