Rotate the patient’s ankle inward (medially) 15–20 degrees.
This position opens the mortise joint, allowing for clear visualization of the joint space between the tibia, fibula, and talus.
2. 45-Degree Medial Oblique
Rotate the patient’s ankle inward (medially) about 45 degrees.
This view shows the entire ankle joint as well as the lateral portion of the tibia and fibula where they meet.
Why Positioning Matters
Proper rotation ensures the correct anatomy is displayed and minimizes the risk of repeat exposures. Understanding the differences between these two oblique views helps technologists provide optimal images for accurate diagnosis.
