Shimadzu Radspeed for Radiography Training: What a Clinical Coordinator Actually Thinks

There is a difference between equipment that checks a box and equipment that actually changes how students learn. For Katie Kruckeberg, clinical coordinator at Riverland Community College in Austin, Minnesota, the Shimadzu Radspeed has been the latter.

A few months after installation, she has a clear picture of what the machine is doing for her students and why it matters.

Modern Features That Were Simply Missing Before

For Kruckeberg, the upgrade wasn’t just about getting newer equipment. It was about getting equipment that actually works the way modern clinical environments expect it to.

Bucky tracking. A functioning collimator. Laser light positioning. These aren’t cutting-edge novelties. They are standard features in clinical settings that Riverland’s previous equipment simply didn’t have.

“That’s new for us,” Kruckeberg said of the bucky tracking. “A working collimator, new to us again, which is great.”

Getting students trained on features that are standard in the field isn’t optional. It’s the baseline.

On-Tube Exam Selection: A Small Feature With a Big Impact

One feature in particular has stood out to Kruckeberg since installation: the ability to select and adjust exam settings directly on the tube, rather than stepping back to the console.

It sounds like a small convenience. In practice, it’s a workflow habit that clinical sites expect and that students now arrive already knowing.

“Students are actually using that,” Kruckeberg said. “And it’s helping prepare them out in clinical. So now they’re not going back behind the console and changing something last minute. They’re doing it right then and there.”

That kind of muscle memory doesn’t develop overnight. It develops through repetition on the right equipment. For Riverland’s students, that repetition is happening in the training lab, not on their first clinical shift.

Intuitive Enough That Faculty Don't Have to Intervene

One of the quieter wins with the Radspeed has been how little hand-holding it requires. For a clinical coordinator managing a full program, equipment that students can figure out on their own is equipment that doesn’t create extra work.

Kruckeberg has noticed the difference.

“We haven’t had any ‘how do I turn this’ or ‘how can I manipulate this touchscreen,'” she said. “Very straightforward.”

That kind of intuitive design isn’t just convenient. It keeps the focus where it belongs: on learning technique, not troubleshooting equipment.

Efficiency as a Habit, Not an Afterthought

What Kruckeberg keeps coming back to is the idea of habit formation. Students who learn to select exam settings at the tube, position accurately with laser guidance, and move efficiently through an exam aren’t just learning a procedure. They’re building a workflow that will serve them for the length of their career.

“That’s great for them to get in the habit of, to practice, to be more efficient with exams out in the real world,” she said.

That is what the right training equipment does. It doesn’t just teach students what to do. It teaches them how to do it the way clinical environments actually expect.
