How to Perform a PA Axillary Shoulder View Standing or Sitting
The PA axillary shoulder view is often performed with the patient lying supine on the table. However, on certain digital systems, this projection can be done with the patient sitting or standing, which is easier for both technologist and patient.
Advantages of the Upright Method
No need for the patient to lie down — ideal for those with limited mobility or discomfort.
Faster positioning and easier setup for the technologist.
Positioning Steps
Seat or stand the patient next to the detector.
Ask the patient to bring their elbow out as far down as they can comfortably go.
Center so that the shoulder joint — and even slightly above it — is fully within the image.
Take the exposure with the patient’s head turned away from the beam.
This technique provides clear visualization of the shoulder joint while minimizing patient discomfort.
